At our practice, our receptionists are now trained to gather some initial information about your medical issue. Any information provided is treated strictly confidentially.
Our receptionists have access to a range of clinical staff and services, allowing them to find the most appropriate solution or service that meets your needs efficiently.
One option our reception team can now provide is booking a same-day appointment through Pharmacy first with an NHS community pharmacist for a personal consultation for certain minor illnesses. This approach helps us utilise appointments more effectively and keeps waiting times down.
After listening to your symptoms, and if they meet the criteria, they may signpost you to an NHS community pharmacist of your choice for assessment and treatment.
Pharmacists are highly trained clinicians experienced in treating common conditions.
Visiting a pharmacist first can provide quicker access to care and reduce the need for GP appointments for simple issues, ensuring everyone receives appropriate care from the right healthcare professional.
Conditions suitable for pharmacist consultation – Pharmacy First
Through Pharmacy First, community pharmacists can assess and provide treatment for a range of minor ailments and illnesses, including:
- Allergies, bites, and stings
- Colds, flu, and respiratory conditions
- Congestion, hay fever, and excess mucus
- Ear wax build-up
- Eye conditions like conjunctivitis or dry eyes
- Gastrointestinal issues (constipation, heartburn, indigestion, haemorrhoids, vomiting)
- Gynaecological conditions and thrush
- Minor muscular pain, sprains, and strains
- Skin conditions (acne, athlete’s foot, dermatitis, rashes, warts, verrucae)
- Mouth and throat conditions (cold sores, ulcers, sore throat)
Conditions not suitable for pharmacist consultation
For more severe or complex conditions, our receptionists may advise an appointment with a GP or other healthcare professional, such as:
- Children under 1 year old
- Immunocompromised individuals
- Severe or worsening symptoms
- Pregnant women
- Symptoms lasting more than 3 weeks
- Conditions not responding to over-the-counter medication
